FG Commissions Flood, Erosion Control Project in Abia

One of the two Ecological Intervention Projects approved by President Muhammadu Buhari for Abia State has been commissioned by the Minister of State for Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr Heineken Lokpobiri. In the first quarter of 2017, President Buhari approved 26 Ecological Intervention Projects and Abia State got two of them. At the commissioning, the Minister charged the community where the project was sited to cherish and take responsibility to own and maintain it to ensure its sustainability. He also urged them to “prevent indiscriminate dumping of refuge in the drainage channels.” Business Post reports that the Flood and Erosion Control project was sited at Amachara, Umuahia, Abia State. The intervention was initiated by the Federal Government to check flood and erosion in the community and was executed by the Ecological Fund Office and monitored by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. According to Mr Lokpobiri, the conception and timely completion of this project was in line with the promise of this administration not to neglect any part of this country owing to its geographical location and/or political persuasion. “it is stating the obvious to say that this project would enhance the living standard of the people of this community and its environs. “It would also check the risks to lives and properties associated with erosion and persistent flooding. The socio-economic outlook and general well-being of the people would also be enhanced by this intervention,” the Minister said. Present at the commissioning was the Abia State Governor, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, representative of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Barr. Georginia Ehunia, Sam Onuigbo, member, House of Representatives, Permanent Secretary, Ecological Fund Office, Royal Fathers and others.
