PUBLIC AFFAIRS AND BILATERAL RELATIONS DEPARTMENT

The Public Affairs Department is one of the Departments of the Political Affairs Office. The Department has two Divisions, namely, Programme and Administration. The Department is headed by a Deputy Director and 11 other staff.

FUNCTIONS
  • Attending to request by CSO/NGOs whenever such request are made, including creating platforms where issues are identified and addressed.
  • As a Department which has as part of its mandate, bringing to the fore, issues of public interest, the Public Affairs Department had developed Concept Notes on critical National issues and drew the attention of relevant organs of Government with a view to adequately addressing such issues which included:
    • Concept note on the Hosting of the Nigeria Youths and Emerging Leadership Summit. It was a proposal to the Ministry of Youth Development towards hosting of a National Youth Summit to address important youth related issues and provide a platform for the exchange and cross-fertilization of ideas amongst carefully selected multi divers’ socially responsible groups of young leaders.
    • Concept note titled “Convocation of a National Summit on the Almajiri Education Programme” which drew attention to the Almajiri System of Education and the potential menace it poses to society if unchecked and the need to take a critical look at it with a view to integrating it into the National Educational Curricular.
    • Similarly, following incessant conflict between Fulani Herdsmen and their host community that recently engulfed the country, the Department, developed a Concept Note “Nomadic Education and its Impact on Fulani Herdsmen/Farmers Conflict’’ with a proposal to host a National Summit to x-ray the causes of the conflict and proffer sustainable solution.
  • The Department participated in the Niger-Niger Joint Commission in the 3rd quarter of 2016 in Dutse, Jigawa State. The meeting was summoned at the instance of the Commission with a view to intervening in the land dispute between the Boarder communities along the Nigeria-Niger Boarder on the Jigawa axis. This timely intervention and quick resolution of the dispute succeeded in averting what would have amounted to an international incident.
  •  The Department was responsible for coordinating activities that saw to the successful execution of the all National Day activities (Democracy Day and Independence Celebrations).


Divisions

The Main functions of the Division are:-

  • Participate in Nigeria-Niger Joint Commission Meetings and served as secretariat to NNJC Local Bilateral Committees Meetings of the Seven Frontline States with Niger Republic.
  • Participate in other joint Commission Meetings having bilateral ties/relations with Nigeria, such as Nigeria and Cameroon, Chad, Benin, Equatorial Guinea e.t.c.
  • Liaise and maintain an effective relationship with relevant Federal Ministries and Extra-Ministerial Departments (MDA's) whose functions affect the Nigeria Public politically such as the National Boundary Commission, National Commission for Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons, INEC.
  • Liaise with the National Assembly and other Government Agencies on political issues affecting the Nigeria public.
  • Participate in the implementation of Joint Commission Project/Activities with neighboring countries.
  • Prepare and Collate the Annual Budget for the Political Affairs Office.
  • Monitor National Political events that affect the public in Nigeria in collaboration with other relevant Government Agencies.
  • Provides Secretariat Service for all SGF meetings on Political Matters.


The Schedule of the Division includes the following:-

  • Serve as Secretariat of both the Top Management and General Meetings of the Political and Economic Affairs Office.
  • Handle issues of staff Welfare, Discipline and Promotion; it collates information and data on all staff of P&EAO.
  • Liaise with the Permanent Secretary's Office and coordinate the activities of the Political and Economic Affairs Office
  • Processes Training needs for all staff of P&EAO.
  • Maintain an effective Political and Economic Affairs Office Registry.
  • Carryout any other ad-hoc duty/assignment that may be assigned.
