INTRODUCTION
The Economic Affairs Office (EAO) ensures the effective coordination and monitoring of the implementation of Government economic policies and programmes. It is structured into two Departments:
- Economic Monitoring, Multilateral Relations and Research (EMMR); and
- Public Affairs and Bilateral Relations (PBR).
FUNCTIONS OF THE ECONOMIC AFFAIRS OFFICE (EAO)
The principal functions assigned to the Office are as follows:
- Advising and offering second opinion on economic issues to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) at the initiative of the Office or as directed by the SGF;
- Providing effective representation for the Office of the SGF at Inter-Ministerial meetings and at other International Economic fora and bilateral meetings;
- Providing Secretariat for meetings of the SGF on matters that affect the economy;
- Initiating measures towards effective implementation of Government’s economic policies;
- Providing mini think-tank services to the SGF on economic issues;
- Monitoring capital projects and economic programmes of special interest to the Presidency;
- Evaluating Government programmes/projects and making appropriate policy recommendations; and
- Preparing reports on selected Federal Government Projects, as may be directed by the SGF.
Economic Monitoring, Multilateral and Research (EMMR)
- Initiate measures aimed at effective implementation of government economic policies;
- Monitor the economic performance of the various sectors in the economy;
- Monitor capital projects and economic programmes of special interest to SGF;
- Evaluate government programmes/projects and make appropriate policy recommendations;
- Undertake macro-economic analysis;
- Carryout research in key industries (having high linkage effects) in the economy;
- Prepare reports on selected Federal Government projects, as may be directed by the SGF;
- Undertake special studies and investigations as may be directed by the SGF on the economic policies of Government;
- Relate with economic research-oriented agencies/institutions;
- Assemble socio-economic report from other agencies, e.g. the Federal Ministry of Finance, National Planning Commission, Central Bank of Nigeria etc.;
- Handle relations with multilateral organisations, including the World Bank Group, (IBRD, IDA, IFAD, UNIDO, WTO,) relevant United Nations Programmes (UNDP, UNCTAD, WFP) specialised Agencies/Commissions(ILO, FOA, ECA) and non-United Nations Multilateral Organisations. (Commonwealth).
PUBLIC AFFAIRS AND BILATERAL RELATION (PBR)
- Evaluate economic reports from Diplomatic Missions, State Governments, Federal Ministries and Non-Government A
- Process applications for exemptions from incorporation in Nigeria by Foreign Companies and Allied Matters Act (Cap 59)
- Participate in the activities of bilateral Chamber of Commerce and Industries , both within and outside Nigeria
- Evaluate proposals and petitions on Economic issues from the Ministries, Departments, Agencies and the public;
- Serves as Secretary/Secretariat to Committees and Panels constituted by the SGF;
- Represent the SGF on Bilateral/Multilateral Ministerial Committees and Commissions;
